MVL: Most Valuable Layer

It’s January and that means the coldest month of the year – bitter winds, snow, and temperatures so low you think the thermometer is broken. I’m not sure what that means for you, but for me it means LAYERS and lots of them. Big sweaters, scarves, gloves, ear muffs and the most important of all – A COAT.

I’ll lay it all out here for ya, coats are my biggest weakness and the piece I am most likely to pull the trigger on and buy. I love them. I love how they pull together and elevate an outfit, without really having to do much at all.

There are so many types of coats to choose from – parkas, puffers, rain coats, trench coats, pea coats, duffle coats – I could go on. But my most favorite of all is a Cocoon coat – my Most Valuable Layer, if you will.

A cocoon coat – what in tarnation is that? Maybe you haven’t heard of this specific style but I bet you’ve seen them. Heck, you may even own one, you just don’t know it yet. The reason why I love a cocoon coat so much is because of the fit. These coats are slightly oversized and unstructured, unlike pea coats, which leaves lots of room for layers without being bulky. There is a boyfriend-ish quality to the coat but when paired with sleek lines or contrasting colors makes for a chic look.

I own two cocoon coats – this black one (here) and this gray one (here). My next purchase is going to be a camel colored one, which I plan to pair with warm neutrals + white pants. I am loving this one by Everlane, and I have a feeling I will be adding it to my closet very soon. 🙂

What is your favorite layer during the cold, winter months?
